Why this matters:
An embedded video player loads together with the page. It is a separate, resource-heavy application with its own styles, fonts, scripts, images, and video data, all of which can slow the initial page load.
For example, embedding a YouTube video can load many YouTube resources even though the embed itself uses only a few lines of code.
Available implementation options:
- Delay loading when the video is below the first viewport. The player and its required components load only when the visitor scrolls close to it.
- Do not load the video player until the visitor clicks Play. A prepared preview image is shown in its place before interaction.
- Use a preview image that opens YouTube or another video platform in a new tab without loading the embedded player at all.
